If you’ve been offered a new job, your employer may refer you to APM for an assessment

Our pre-employment assessments are designed to ensure your health and safety at work and prevent potential injuries.

If you have a pre-existing condition, a pre-employment assessment will also help an employer or recruiter make recommendations for a suitable job.

It may include parts of a functional assessment to check your capabilities with any physical requirements of a job, such as heavy lifting, moving objects or long periods of standing or sitting.

Depending on the role, your pre-employment assessment may require physical activity so you will need to wear comfortable clothes.

Usually these assessments take up to one hour but may vary in length depending on the job requirements.

Please also remember to check with your employer or recruiter where your pre-employment assessment is taking place.

What happens in my assessment?

Parts of your pre-employment assessment will depend on the job you are starting

Our assessors will work with your employer or recruiter to make sure you are given an accurate assessment.

Your assessment will be designed to replicate the physical demands of the activities you will be expected to carry out at work.

Basic parts of a pre-employment assessment often include:

  • a questionnaire about your medical history
  • recording your height, weight and blood pressure
  • a vision test
  • a grip strength test
  • test to check your movement and physical function (including lifting, pushing or pulling objects and bending down)

You may also be required to have a drug and alcohol test.

We work with your employer or recruitment agency to make sure you have the information you need to complete your assessment. Check with your employer, or recruitment agent, if there are any specific requirements.
